West Lake Cultural Square

Background

West Lake Cultural Square, as Hangzhou's urban cultural living room, integrates technology, culture, and art, serving as an important window showcasing the city's image. With a large daily foot traffic and diverse activities, traditional service facilities are no longer sufficient to meet the modern citizen's demand for cultural experiences and smart services. It is necessary to enhance the square's quality and vitality through digital upgrades while preserving its cultural heritage.

Challenges

The project faces multiple challenges: how to leverage technology while highlighting the cultural theme; how to guide visitors to better experience the square's diverse cultural spaces; and how to enhance citizen participation through innovative design. Simultaneously, the facilities need to seamlessly integrate with the square's architectural style, avoiding clashes between technological elements and the cultural atmosphere.

Solution

We created a holistic solution centered on a "digitalized walkway": smart sensors are embedded along the walkway to automatically record exercise data via facial recognition; interactive cultural knowledge quiz devices allow citizens to learn while exercising; and an intelligent lighting system automatically adjusts brightness based on foot traffic. All facilities are designed with elements of Jiangnan architecture, complementing the square's cultural atmosphere.

Benefits

This solution achieves an innovative integration of cultural dissemination and smart services: the digitalized walkway perfectly combines fitness and cultural experiences, significantly increasing daily usage; interactive installations enhance citizens' enthusiasm for participating in cultural activities; and the intelligent system greatly reduces energy consumption. The project has successfully created a benchmark for the digital construction of urban cultural squares, providing citizens with higher-quality public cultural spaces.
